To save others the trouble in future, I'll just point out that neither of
these questions are even slightly relevant because Jeremy had already said

This shows that the kernel has been loaded, at which stage LILO (a boot
loader, you may recall, has done its job). Much more likely that some of
your utils need to be updated to work with 2.4 as already mentioned by others.

Does this mean that in fact you did manage to get a 2.4 kernel booting ? If
so then your problem is with your new kernel configuration and probably with
something on your relatively old installation (WRT 2.4). Start taking out
things that you added in and see what kills it iff you actually did have a
working 2.4 kernel.
