Anyone tried this yet? It kicks ass!
Basically, if you've got XFree86 4.1.0 installed on a laptop with the MS
fonts, gdkxft will give you *decent* antialiasing in GTK+ apps, and if
you've got KDE 2.2 or later, you can simply set an env var. Sweet.
Normally, my opinion of AA is that it looks like I've lost my specs.
But with the sub-pixel rendering (similar to MS' ClearType), it really
cleans it up and looks a hell of a lot better.
Add this line to your ~/.Xdefaults:
and set these env vars:
and you're set.
