[ILUG] Unusual RPM problem in Slackware 8

Any time I try to install an RPM in slackware 8 it fails to find various dependencies (such as /bin/sh or /usr/bin/perl)...even though I know for sure they are installed and in my path.

I've set up 2 systems with Slack 8 and they both have the same problem. Anyone encountered this before?
