Yep, or else you choose ACPI instead of apm, ACPI is still experimental,
uses more memory and doesn't poweroff - at least not for me.

Hi,
I have compiled a new kernel with additional features, however on shutting
the system down the kernel stops all processes as expected but no longer
spins down the hard disks. Did i forget to compile apmd features into the
kernel ???
