To be fair, I was one of the eircom ADSL triallists, and I consistently
got 400+kb/s downloads. I've seen a certain quote of sub 1kB/s speeds, but
I often see heavily loaded sites slow to those speeds even at work, where
there's a lot of bandwidth available. I never once saw slow downloads on
the ADSL trial that could be attributable to contention on eircoms
network. (For example, I recall downloading a hardware driver and getting
a speed of ~80kb/s, so I began downloading something else from a different
site, and it came in at ~300kbs).
Unfortunately, eircom knows where the money is - almost a third of all
call minutes on eircoms network are internet calls. ADSL _is_ cheap - in
comparison to eircoms own ruinously high per minute call charges. As long
as eircom owns the local loop, there will be no serious competition. If
the Government cared about delivering on the hype of the "e-commerce hub",
it would be subsidising the rollout of wireless local loop, and even
subsidising the deployment of upgraded cable networks. But they'd rather
get you a medical card!
