Could be an irq conflict of some sort or if you have just compiled a new kernel could be you need to recompile for say a k6 arch even if you have a k7 though surely you would get an oops as I sometimes do when compiling as a k7/athlon arch...? Yes you could try pulling out pci/isa cards etc or booting with an install cd and dropping to cli and mount /dev/your_root, if you get this far you could just start negating modules to see if you can get to a very basic boot from hdd and then recompile kernel?
