Or better again,

/var/log/samba/log.smb and log.nmb or is it nmb.log? I can never remember.

But they will tell you specifically what the problem is.

You can in fact use DHCP with a samba server, this is what I have on my HAN.

I am happy in the knowledge that each of my box's get exactly the same
ipaddress each time they log on, 192.168.0.240 and 192.168.0.17 for the
workstations.

Can't remeber the specifics at the moment but I could check for you if you
need it. mail me at home else I'll forget.

What errors are reported in the log files when you try to start it?
/var/log/messages is a good place to look.

Does the network setup definitely work?
Can you start smbd?

You should be able to use either DHCP or a static IP but Samba likes to
be able to find out the hostname of the machine it's running on, so
this will have to be either setup in the /etc/hosts file or be available
from DNS.
