Not alone possible but quite common.

If you're using NIS use it completely and correctly which means that you
don't have user entries anywhere except on the NIS master server.
Then you adjust passwd (replace with a script, symbolic link or whatever's
appropriate) on all the clients so that the users are actually running a NIS
password changer e.g. yppasswd if you're using Linux, which I presume you
are, this being the ILUG list :-), or the appropriate command for other OS
e.g. passwd -r nis if they're using oh, say, Solaris.
IMHO it's also not a good idea to use the server's /etc/passwd as a source
for the NIS map. I used to use /etc/passwd on each machine for its local
passwords e.g. root and the NIS passwd map only had passwords for those
accounts which were the same on the whole network.
