sounds like you have a newish redhat, where passwd is pam aware and
uses pam to change the password. it's finding the password in your
local files and changing those, and never gets as far as checkign NIS.
(pam_unix.so).
you'll need to follow Niall's suggestion and implement NIS the "good"
way, ie all user a/c's /only/ in NIS.
