I've been working on a cheap Linux CDROM aspect as part of the
whoisireland project for a few months now. The costs of having CDs
produced professionally is a bit high considering the Irish market. I
think the period between Madrake releases is about two or three months.
Having 1000 CDs burned and selling them in that few months in the Irish
market would be difficult. Redhat is perhaps more staid in that the new
releases take somewhat longer (ditto for Slackware). The Cheepbytes CDs
seem to be silkscreen printed and that is way too expensive here.
The CD duplication/printing equipment is also expensive ranging from IEP
5K to about IEP 15K. Then there is the choice of thermal or inkjet
printing. This does not even include the cost of the media.
Then there is the issue of packaging. To do it right (cardboard
mailers/envelopes etc) adds to the cost. Running a mailorder business is
tough in that you have to get the product to the postoffice and also be
able to cope with non-payment and stuff lost in the post. Linux Emporium
is a good operation but it caters to a market that is a couple of
magnitudes bigger than the Irish market. Then there is the finite
lifetime of the market since the computer magazines tend to include
Linux distros (or cut down versions) on their cover discs.
