On Tru64 5.1 (Alpha), it's position-independent by default for me as
well, but on Solaris 2.8 (sparc) it seems to be position-dependent by
default, much like OpenBSD on sparc. So, yeah, it's almost certainly a
question of architecture.

(I'm sure Brendan Kehoe could enlighten us, if he's reading ... :-)
