Diogenes the Cynic said it about 250 years before Paul quoted him to
Timothy, so it has been part of human wisdom for a long time. Few people
seem to believe it, including the spiritual heirs of St Paul.
I think he really said, 'The love of money is the *mother* of all evil'.
As an academic from an academic family, I haven't met too many people who
had a lot of money, but they haven't impressed me, and I've known a lot of
good competent people who don't much worry about money, but always seem to
have just enough for the important stuff. Me, I keep books to 1 or fewer
significant figures, if I bother at all.
