No - it didn't work with SuSE as mentioned in an earlier posting but it did
work with RH7.1. And to be sure I didn't end up with egg on my face, I
booted up the box before replying and had a look at the X config file in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 which contains this
# File generated by anaconda
.
.
.
.
Section "Device"
# no known options
Identifier "S3 Trio3D"
Driver "s3virge"
VendorName "S3 Trio3D"
BoardName "S3 Trio3D"
EndSection
If I run startx now it of course doesn't work and I get this error
(II) S3VIRGE: driver (version 1.6.0) for S3 ViRGE chipsets: virge, 86C325,
virge vx, 86C988, virge dx, virge gx, 86C375, 86C385, virge gx2,
86C357, virge mx, 86C260, virge mx+, 86C280, trio 3d, 86C365,
trio 3d/2x, 86C362, 86C368
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:

The only thing I can suggest is that perhaps the card I used used a
different chipset - it said Trio 64V on the chip, I remember, but perhaps it
said 3D as well - I don't remember. Obviously it said something which made
it fall into the category of chipsets supported by S3VIRGE.
To Mr. (or Ms.) inference15 at domain eircom.net - try installing XFree 3.3.6 or try a
different VGA card - I still have a small pile of Matrox Mystiques if you're
stuck - you can have one of those for little or nothing.

Niall
