Ronan,
as an experiment switch autofs off in all run levels and then use
--add again. The poor guy wasn't bashing RH he simply stated he didn't know
it very well, oh wait, yes he was. I might at some stage read the entire man
page, there's probably something in there about it checking to see if it is
already managed by chkconfig and if so leave the current settings alone ...
RH 7.0
chkconfig version 1.2.16
[root at domain fragile /root]# chkconfig --list vmware
vmware 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
[root at domain fragile /root]# chkconfig --add vmware
[root at domain fragile /root]# chkconfig --list vmware
vmware 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
[root at domain fragile /root]# chkconfig --del vmware
[root at domain fragile /root]# chkconfig --add vmware
[root at domain fragile /root]# chkconfig --list vmware
vmware 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:off 5:off 6:off

I really, REALLY hate arbitrary distribution bashing. Niall, this is
RH7.2 in action:
[root at domain klortho root]# chkconfig --list autofs
autofs 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
[root at domain klortho root]# chkconfig --add autofs
[root at domain klortho root]# chkconfig --list autofs
autofs 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
Now. Evidently there is some sort of a problem with your /particular/
installation. I would suggest you debug it before simply saying "pfft,
RedHat". It's all Linux, and simply pissing on it without trying to
figure out what's wrong helps nobody.
Cheers,
Waider. Happy RedHat user since 5.1.
