Just about anyone can register any name now. Owning the .ie domain does not mean
one has the copyright on the name.

Any one running such a business will most likely pay the extra EUR 80 pm for

Two years ago, people (maybe not you) were complaining about IEDR not allowing
generic names to be registered, now (other) people are complain that they have
allowed a generic name to be registered, looks like they cannot win...

Eircom are a private company, tis the responsibility of the government to do
this, not Eircom.
