you're probbaly still using the software based opengl.
try getting the mesa compiled version from the tnt site
and using that instead. eg, quake3 with the measa-tnt is
supposed to be as good as voodoo3 cards..
The mesa-tnt says its for the tnt2 cards but it still may
work for tnt1 cards, since else where they report
backward compatability as one of the features......
