An ADSL modem is a modem - it de/modulates the data stream from/onto
multiple carrier frequencies on the copper pair using similar kinds of
symbol encoding to those used in modems - I suppose saying that an ADSL
modem is like a bunch of voice modems operating in parallel isn't the worst
analogy in the world (though I doubt it's the best).
