You can certainly have an application which is a directory containing
whatever but the application isn't executable - a binary file somewhere is.
And the Mac finder certainly doesn't try to abstract away the idea of
folders (directories) like that. You want to run an executable on a Mac, you
double click its (or an alias' - like a symlink, only in ways better) icon,
or perhaps pick it from a menu. You certainly can't run it by clicking on
its enclosing directory - what would this system do if there were two
application binaries ?
