Yeah, that sort of thing. You could do it at the OS/FS level, or just
write a bunch of shell scripts...

That is a potential problem. However
* Disk space is no longer an issue for most situations
* Library collisions and dependencies (aka DLL hell) are a major PITA.
Try, for example, installing something from a later version of your
distro onto the version you have installed and are happy with. You
end up upgrading a bunch of stuff, which results in breakage of
existing apps etc. This probably works with debian, but it causes
problems with mandrake, and, I imagine, redhat, suse, etc
