[ILUG] rdate: connection refused

I'm trying to set the date on one Linux box from another. Here's what happens

[root at domain madcow]# rdate gateway
rdate: Connection refused

As it happens, gateway trusts madcow at an rsh level (machines on same net) so

[root at domain madcow]# rsh gateway date
Mon Aug 9 15:12:52 BST 1999

but this shouldn't have an impact on rdate, good or bad. Man rdate tells me no
more than I already know about rdate. madcow runs 2.035 and gateway 2.0.37 in
case that's relevant. I have another pair of machines which are running 2.2.5
and 2.0.36 and they can happily rdate each from the other.

egrep "date|time" /etc/services gives the same answer on all four machines (is
that relevant ? I've no idea what mechanism rdate uses to do its work, and I've
no immediate desire to fetch RFC 868 to find out).

Ideas, anyone ?

Kindest regards,

Niall O Broin
