[ILUG] Downgrading the kernel

Hi

I use the SuSE distribution here, and have a problem!! ;-)

I need to use the new features of the packages included in the SuSE 8.0
distribution (Samba / Postfix / Amavis etc), but I also use a Promise
Fasttrak TX2000 IDE RAID Card. The driver for this card is in a binary only
format, and only available for SuSE up to 7.3.

I have the disks for SuSE 7.2 (kernel 2.4.4) so I have built my new machine
using the kernel from 7.2, and the applications etc from 8.0 by installing
8.0, manually renaming the kernel files (/boot and /etc/modules.conf),
installing the 7.2 kernel package (k_deflt) and modifying lilo.conf
appropriately. So far all is well and all the applications appear to run
without any problems.

The problem is that the machine locks up hard when I try to install the
fasttrak driver module (ft.o).

Can anybody advise a better way of doing this, or am I stuck with using the
7.2 distribution for now until Promise release an updated varsion of the
driver module?

Many thanks

Adrian
