After quite some time on the dole-queue, I'm getting tired of ads for Admin
and programming Guru's. As I can't find any entry-level jobs in programming
or UNIX-type system admin, I thought I'd ask here.
I've got over 15 Years experience in electronic maintenance, including over
three years at 3COM maintaining testers for various network devices, almost 2
years at Celestica maintaining testers for token ring devices, video cards,
Sun Sparc5 processors, mobile phone base stations and pagers, and 6 weeks at
Benchmark troubleshooting Sun V880 servers. I've almost 5 years experience
working with testers based on HP-UX and about 4 years working with my own
Linux systems at home.
With the down-turn in manufacturing, I realise it's time for a career shift.
I just finished the second year of a three year certificate course in
Computer Programming. This course might have a follow-on degree program, but
DIT is still fighting with the Dept of Education for certification of the
follow-on course. Either way, I am interested in continuing my education in
programming on a part-time basis.
I am hoping to find an entry-level position in either programming or system
admin to help me develop my skills for this career shift. I've been working
on a personal programming project, but find that without interacting with
other programmers I keep hitting a dead-end. I've had moderate success
maintaining my Linux systems at home but I would not consider myself to be
skilled in system admin. I am a very dedicated worker and enjoy problem
solving. This was why I got involved in Electronics maintenance in the first
place.
Anyone willing to take me under their wing and help develop my skills please
contact me by E-Mail for my C.V. and any other details you might need.
Sorry for such an open request, but it seems the placement agencies are only
interested in Guru's with decades of experience.
Cheers,
John Gay
