Right, success!

I managed the restore using TestDisk, from www.cgsecurity.org

gpart managed to find the extended partitions, but not the primary
ones. Testdisk found all the partitions, apart from the first, as the
beginning of it had been overwritten during the accident. (The best
reason to put your windows partition first!)

So all I have to do at some point is alter the partition table to add
the first partition.
