Thanks to Dermot and Wesley for the off-list replies. I have more info.

The error message that appears in the console is the following:
ide0: reset timed-out, status=0x80
hda: status timeout: status=0x80 {Busy}
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:06(hda), sector ##### (where that's the 5 digit
sector number)

I also got
hda: drive not ready for command

After googling for
http://www.google.com/search?q=hda%3A+drive+not+ready+for+command
http://www.google.com/search?q=ide0%3A+reset+timed-out%2C+status%3D0x80

I found
http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/35/1997/1/0/127248/ (my HD is a Western
Digital one too)
http://kalamazoolinux.org/mailarchive/0011/msg00068.html (this thread looks
interesting)

I disabled UDMA for the primary master (/dev/hda) and now attempting another
backup. I doubt UDMA was disabled before this because /dev/hdb complained on
boot-up when it was disabled for that drive.

If anyone can shed any more light on this it would be appreciated!

Donncha.
