Bryan,
Ok, check the chipset specifically. After that there are linux modem
drivers available from
http://support.euro.dell.com/ie/en/filelib/search/catalog.asp?restart=true
or http://www.dell.com/us/en/esg/topics/linux_modem.htm for certain
chipsets. Further searching should point you to
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO-2.html#ss2.5 for information and
www.linmodem.org or linmodems-howto for the definitive. Chances are there
are Linux drivers out there for the winmodem.
As regards your USB problem, eh, I don't know, never seen that
problem.

im gonna have to find out tonite ( with lspci -vv (PB)) .. it's up in my
dads house
... I looked up the specs on the dell website but it was only described as a
v92 ...
end of info :-)
Theres another strange thing about that model in that when I plug a usb zip
drive into
one of the usb ports in the front of the machine it isn't detected. However
if I plug it
in at the back it is fine. A digital camera plugged into the front of the
machine works fine.
( this is all under windows XP )
Under Linux ( Suse 8.0 )/Red Hat 7.3 nothing is detected if it is plugged
into the
front USB ports. Under redhat 7.3 devices will be sucessfully detected if
plugged
into the rear usb ports ( i deleted suse before i thought of trying this )
Stranger and stranger.

I want to get a relatively cheap internal modem for a dell box ( it ships
with unknown crap winmodem)
( stay away from the dell dimension 4400 as its crap for linux ). Can anyone
recomend one / a place where the
counter staff wont look at me blankly with saliva hanging from the sides of
their mouths when I say
"it's for linux"
