Finally I figured it out.
With the Alcatel Speed Touch 350i, here is how she blows.
Do the following if you are having problems with this.
1. Default the settings on the modem/router. 'Dip switch 4 for 30 seconds'.
2. Make sure you have a Bridge 'I called mine EIRCOM' with the following
3. Go to your Linux NAT/Firewall and run the adsl-setup from rp_pppoe,
supply the pertinant information.
4. Next run adsl-start..... you should be sailing skipper.
The crux is that with this particular device after you default the
modem/router, it is insufficient to simply run pppoe on your linux box, you
must have a bridge configured on the modem itself.
This should be of use to people who are availing of eircom's middle range
6gb capped dsl service and who like me accidentally or quite delibrately
nuked the bridge settings sent with the modem.
In effect to use pppoe from a linux box using it's second nic to connect to
this dsl modem you will have to have a bridge installed on the modem else
pppoe from the Linux box will not work. If the tech I was short with in
eircom is reading this, apologies for my tertness with you, I have just
stepped off of a 19 hour trip from Seattle - San Diego - Gatwick - Dublin.
