yep thats what I'm afraid of, reason is it's for my dad so I wanted to make
sure it
would be a winner. I've been looking through all those linmodem sites for a
couple
of days but nobodys really said whether it was likely to work.

Just FYI,

I have never had any consistent luck with the ltmodem server on the dell
Lucent modem...

Yes, ltmodem never correctly set the IRQ, but when I fixed that, the problem
became handshaking and sometimes carrier detection drop outs...

Damn modem kept jumping IRQ's + I/o's every few reboots...so I bought an
external Diamond Supraexpress....problem solved ;)

just my 2 cent...

Ha, I was *just* about to say that... Had it in the clipboard and
everything :) There do however seem to be certain bugs with the lt_modem.o
code. Things like modem noise not being generated during protocol
negotiation and irqs not being set. Basically it could take a small bit of
fiddling with OR it may just work. Either way you should spend a bit of time
today, if you can, reading through other people's experiences with the
ltmodem installation. That way you'll have some idea of what's happening
when you go play with the system tonight.

There's an example here albeit on a Toshiba notebook, the principles
should still stand for same chipset.

ismod ltmodem.o may prove better results than insmod winmodem.o.
Download ltmodem.o from the link given below (just in case).
