While the Kernighan and Ritchie book is good, I found for a straight forward c & c++ book
the OReilly book http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/cplus/ is great. Up to the usual Oreilly standards and very good value.
The Begining Linux Programming is good but very wide ranging covering c, GDK, python, perl, shell stuff, other gnu tools like make, lint, csv etc. and only really gives an overview. Quite good in that context though.
