[if i was the incoming admin i'd change the distro, but more importantly
i'd buy a new box. the more things you run on a firewall, the less
of a firewall it is. and since oracle is a closed source application,
i'd feel very insecure running that on a firewall.]

From D.C.'s guide to sysadmin, use of Linux on an old box that had hardware
difficulties to begin with (horrible stuff with the piix3 chipset and a udma
hdd attached - 'fixed by not turning on DMA by default in kernel config in
case you are interested'), and assuming I can get a 'demonstration' oracle
db going will save 'E1800 worth of Eircom DSL Router/Firewall and onsite'
and will possibly allow me to annex another box for Linux oracle devel,
providing the power that be like oracle and find stability, security, speed
and cost bonuses with Linux 'it sells itself'.

I'm quite sure if the guy's with the cheque books like oracle and saw merit
in Linux, that I could have a lovley 'possibly smp' scsi Dell fast_server_x
bought for dedicated oracle devel using Linux, in any case Slackware stays
for the moment and if the one who comes after me from the primordial ether
of the dark side seems squeemish about using vim to edit some /etc/rc.d
config files then I will probably end up putting him in Mandrake country
with a pile of doc's entitled 'Sysadmin for Marvel Superheros'.
