In my humble opinion , I have found the Beginning linux programming book to
be a great help
It allows for flexibility in your approach to learning and an insight into
other programming
options on Linux. This is combined with a solid and very easy to follow
programming C section that
would be good to start off your journey to the dark side :-)

A really simple book on C programming is
"Schaum Outline Series: Programming in C"
Although not specifically about Linux it is easy to follow and cheap at
EUR20.
