No, Karl didn't really get that much of a hard time. He's a big boy, and he
knew damn well that he was going to get it in the neck to a certain extent
but he went ahead and did it - fair play to him. It was a very informative
talk he gave, and I'd like to echo the thanks other people have given him
(and the other speakers) though hell will freeze over before he convinces me
that PPPoE doesn't suck large hairy rocks (though from his talk, I do
understand why he, working for a DSL vendor, likes it)
BTW one very interesting think did come out of the whole ADSL discussion. I
am connected to an ADSL enabled exchange, I live quite near to it, the
copper is relatively new, I currently have an ISDN line and yet I got the
Dear John letter from Eircom. At the time I expressed some surprise on the
list and I idly wondered if perhaps Eircom had arsed it up and the test
failed because I have an ISDN line (because it's a POTS line test) but I
thought that they couldn't be that incompetent. Guess what - they were ! So
the procedure is that you get your ISDN line changed back to POTS, then wait
a week (to allow Eircom to get their databases in sync) and ask for a retest
for ADSL. Of course if you happen to be marginal for ISDN, and fail the ADSL
test after all, and then want to have ISDN back, you're going to be stuck
with the charges each way - this is Eircom, after all.
Another option is to wait until Eircom makes available ADSL over ISDN. One
rumour I've heard is that this will happen at the end of the summer, but
there was no year specified :-( At the moment, all Eircom's exchange
equipment has DSL POTS modems. It's completely feasible to install DSL ISDN
modems - it just hasn't been done yet.
