Make a new big image that will accomdate the dimensions of your assembled
map, and paste all the bits into that. Alternatively, check out the xview
tool (if your Linux box has it) which allows you to paste together images
in a pretty arbitrary fashion. Takes a bit of tooling around to get it
right, but does have the advantage of being non-interactive so if it gets
sluggish due to the constrains of slinging around large chunks of memory
you can go have a coffee and come back when it's done.
(I guess you could also use Gimp's scripting in a similar fly-by-wire fashion)
