[Not really. But why not build openssl into an RPM from source? Or even
use the RedHat-provided RPM?]

Yes really, forcing an rpm could break a dependancy and broken dependancies
are not pretty, thus showing what is actually installed on the system as
opposed to what the rpm db thinks is installed. I have forced rpms in my
day, but as a last resort when I can't build the source... but I suppose to
each his (or her..) own.

Dependancy problems like this are one of the main reasons I detest rpm
distros, prefaring Gentoo, BSD or even debian style packaging systems.
