Like Waider, I've often taken option (d):
Grab the SRPM, install it. Edit the .spec file to remove the
--with-foobar, change the Release: to add .kh1 and rpm -ba,
hack the Dependencies: lines as required and rpm -ba.
Gives me "customised" packages with fewer dependencies, with
the benefits of package management.
