customs&excise seem to apply duties at random - as if they dont have
the resources to check and charge everything and just pick a random
sample of packages to charge duty on. so just be glad you dont
/always/ get charged.

and the charges are crazy - i paid over EUR300 last year on something
i'd paid about $600 for!

worse, originally they wanted over EUR600!! the bloody sender (an AOL
user - its true what they say) for some reason decided to declare the
value off the thing as $1500.

anyway, if you know the seller, get them to fill in the customs docket
'favourably' (but still truthfully of course). be pessimistic about
the value, if it's secondhand kit from ebay - make sure they describe
it as such (or 'obsolete' even for old hardware.)

however, the cold reality is that everything you import from the
states is subject to duty.

afaik only exemption is for gifts - but then only for those worth less
than EUR100. (iirc).
