I think someone else answered this the last time: the RedHat people
put a lot of effort into their kernels, including dragging in and
testing patches from Alan Cox that aren't otherwise going to be
trivial to include. To throw away all that effort might be considered
a little hasty, particularly if all you're looking for is a known-good
fire-and-forget kernel compile.
