SuSE 8.0 uses kernel 2.4.18 which, as you read on kernel.org, is the latest
stable release. 2.4.9 is rather old and there's no reason to use it. From
the tone of the postings I'd say you're not a kernel compilation expert so
why not just use the SuSE supplied kernel which is, after all, the latest
stable release (2.4.18 - albeit with quite a number of SuSE patches, but all
the major distributions do that now) ?

List maintainer: listmaster at domain linux.ie Correct, after several attempts at recompiling its not coming up right for me at all. I just thought running a lighter kernel was best, I'm not using any SCSI devices etc so why have a kernel that supports it I figure but now it seems more trouble than its worth. And I was reading the version numbers wrong, I looked at 2.4.9 as 2.4.90 > 2.4.18 duh! So maybe when I get sommore energy I'll go for it again for about the 23rd time.
