 Armour is mostly optional. Being irish, the most armour people wore was
maybe leg pieces, helmet & gauntlets.

 I think the society you were thinking about was the "dress up in blue
plastic armour and bash each other with wooden sticks covered in foam"
though.

 We use nice heavy metal weapons, and are trained to dent, not kill.
