Agreed!! But with caveats. I bet the GNOME/KDE folks decided that X
resources were (a) too confusing for users (which is true, editing
~/.Xdefaults is a pain in the ass, constantly requiring manpage lookups to
find out what the name of the latest widget/app/resource is *). So they
decided to create their own config system -- which is now confusing and a
pain in the ass for users, in turn.

(* I have a vague feeling that "editres" is supposed to help here, but
about 3/4 of the windows on my desktop don't respond to it -- even the
ones which still use resources ;)
