 What exactly do you mean by 'Linux code' ? Did you install a Linux
operating system on to it ? Linux doesn't use printer drivers, as such.

 For more info on getting printers working under Linux, check out
linuxprinting.org - there is a lot of information there.

 Better at what ? Wine tries to turn Windows API calls into Linux ones.
Applications use APIs - not drivers or hardware. So no, Wine is no luck.
There is a Linux Winmodem Howto. Google will tell you where it is, and
then the howto will tell you what to do next.
