I tried logging back in as root (feel the power!!), but still no joy.
Also other off-list suggestions to add or comment out parts of my
XF86Config-4 file didn't work.

I've been doing some reading on project GATOS
(http://gatos.sourceforge.net) which has yielded some updated ATI
drivers, so I'll try them. The livid-ati mailing list has been quite
educational (including a de-lurking post by our very own Waider!!)

Thanks for the help on & off list - I'm now fairly convinced it's
something to do with the standard xf86 mach64 driver. Am now boldly
going to break my X system.

Cheers
