i just saw an interesting /. linked article on things linux needs -
it in turn linked back to some /. comments on some x issues. in those
comments, someone commented that X is bloated because of it's memory
usage. for instance on this machine:
PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND
1357 root 15 0 88660 78M 3352 R 0.5 13.8 258:04 X
however it's an x *server*. first, apparently x counts the video ram
as memory it uses. second, clients store things on the server. so a
lot of that ram is stuff the clients stuck on it.
however it would be interesting to get more detailed stats from x about
what memory is what. is there a tool to do this? some limited googling
+ some locate-ing didn't find anything.
