[ILUG] Getting the pid of a process

Hi all,

is there any sure-fire (and easy) way of getting the pid of a process
that's just been kicked off.

I want to start a daemon and write its pid to a file in /var/run (or
somewhere similar). Can I avoid grepping through the process table to
get this?
