Don't use smail. All smail setups I have had the unfortune to get in
contact with where violating RFC 1123. There are plenty alternatives.

The sendmail FAQ explains it, and I'm sure I could dig something up for
postfix, but no idea about smail.

The general idea is to make sure that your mailhost doesn't use DNS
(coz that will bring up a connection to your ISP's nameserver), designate
a smarthost (your ISP's mail server), and configure the smtp mailer as
 "expensive".

More than likely DNS related. If it's a small network, make sure all
machines are in /etc/hosts. Otherwise, check your name server setup.
