Thanks so much to everyone on the list and on #linux for their always
helpful suggestions. The problem is now sorted out - the upshot of it
is (I think) do not use Partition Magic on a drive supporting XP's EFS
(Encrypted File System) unless you have a .NET server - because the
encryption is done at a user level - not at a domain level - and 2000
Server cannot reset it.

Someone on #linux suggested I write up my saga for the list so rather
than pollute you with yet more noise on this, for those so inclined the
