Hithere
Any help with my problem will significantly reduce my stress levels and improve marital relations.
I'm at the end of my tether with a Sitecom 56K external serial modem that I've spent most of yesterday evening trying to set up on my new PC.
If I don't wait for the dialtone, I can get it to dial - so I assume that the /dev/modem --> /dev/ttyS0 setup is correct.
ATI queries reveal that it has a CL-MD 56XX chipset (Cirrus Logic), which accords with the manufacturer's description.
I tried the following initialization string from the "Mr Modem" website: AT&F&C1&D2V1E0W3S0=0
Didn't work.
After dialling it waits for OK, and sometimes returns "BLACKLISTED".
I'm dialling into eircom using one of their "free" dialup accounts.
The phone cable's fine - I've tested it from my laptop. The account is fine, I can connect using it.
I'm running Red Hat 7.3 and am using the Kppp dialler.
The Red Hat Internet Configuration Wizard doesn't seem to work - it doesn't detect the modem, and won't use /dev/ttyS0.
The computer also has a crappy winmodem installed, but seeing my initial success with Kppp, I don't see how this could be a problem.
You may well want to know why I don't get my ass into gear and dive into /etc/ppp and do things by hand. Part of the reason is that my wife needs to use this computer and will NOT connent to the Internet from the command line without throwing a tantrum and making disparaging comparisons to other OS's. The other part is that I know precious little about chat scripts.
Any advice appreciated. Even links to good web-sites about chat scripts if it comes to that.
