My Ultra 5 300MHz cost me EUR200. I picked it up at an auction whilst
looking for a cheap Dell desktop to run as a mail server, but these had been
sold for EUR350.
Well worth the money.
Buying a *new* Ultra 5 would be expensive on a personal budget. In that
case, a V100 would be a better option.
I have not found a way to run x86 binaries. The PCI card is an option, but
it would most probably be cheaper to buy a new PC.
Solaris/SPARC binaries on Linux/SPARC should not be an issue. And I believe
Sun are working to make Linux/SPARC binaries work on Solaris.
On the issue of graphics cards: in theory you can plug in any PC PCI card
and it will work with Linux/SPARC if it works with Linux/x86. Problem is
that closed drivers only seem to come in x86 versions. Most good video cards
are AGP, not PCI, so you need to watch out for that as well. So make sure
you go for a PCI video card with good, open drivers.
