Jeez. You get upset by the weirdest things.

I've had indications from time to time that perhaps lsof doesn't tell
you everything, e.g. a filesystem that won't unmount because it's busy,
but lsof isn't showing anything open on the filesystem. Personally I'd
be more inclined to trust the kernel to count, because when the kernel
says, "do I have room for more filehandles?", it's sure as hell not
going to ask lsof.
