Check your processes via "top" or whatever. I had this wierd issue with one
of my RH units where [AFAIR] KDEinit [sorry was ages ago] was eating up the
CPU cycles [99% CPU] for no reason that I could figure out. Anyway I did a
kill on the process and its wen't away. It re-appeared on another unit with
a Mandrake 8.2 install, so I KO'ed it again.
The problem was still there after closing X entirely!
Since then it never re-surfaced so I didn't figure out why this was
happening. I kept meaning to ask the luggers but never got around to it as I
wasn't at home whenever I thought of it :-(
As for the system, one had 256MB and the other had 512 running on a athlon
XP1700. I think 128MB SHOULD still be OK, considering I have a box here with
only 64MB on a PII, KDE 3 is slow as a dog when running mozilla, but
konqueror seems OK. If you wan't to leave tons of apps open, then deffo get
the RAM upgrade ;--)
Pleasant summer eh? Well maybe for ye lucky lecturer types, not when you're
riding a bike to work, welcome back :)

------------------
Hi,
Hope you've all had a pleasant summer (using the word in the strictest
sense).
I'm back at work for the new term.
I've recently upgraded from RH7.2 to 7.3, partly to avail of the new version
of KDE (v3), but find that my system is crawling, even with only a small
number of applications running on it (Konqueror web browser, Kmail and
an xterm or two).
I've temporarily switched to Gnome so that I can at least be productive;
but I'm wondering is anyone aware of recommended minimum hardware
requirements for KDE 3? I'm running on a PIII with 128MB RAM. I'm checking
the kde.org website and I can find details on software requirements (libs),
but nothing on hardware. I imagine I should try to upgrade the RAM to
a minimum of 256MB, but I've no idea if even that will be enough.
Thanks in advance,
Cormac.
