Resize partition 3.
Then create an extended partition in it and logical partitions within the
extended.
Par example in Mandrake once you resize your 3rd partition (having
remembered to defragment it first) if you just hit the autoallocate button
in the Mandrake installer the intall program will make the decisions for
you.
If you want to be a little bit more hands on for your first time.
Make
3 partitions for Linux at least.
Where hda4 is your extended partition had1 is the Dell utility partition
had2 is your C: drive and had3 your D: drive.
One for your root partition / hda5 --Make this one big
One for your swap swap hda6
And one for /home hda7 such that if you have to nuke your distro on hda5 you
don't loose all of your personal information, development stuff, mp3's or
whatever.
The best way to resize the drive is probably through the Mandrake supplied
utility's or the same one's supplied with Red Hat / SuSE.... which for your
first time should be intuitive enough..........
Then install lilo as your boot loader... or grub if you prefare....
